Predictors of admission for diabetic ketoacidosis to the University of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital: a five-year retrospective chart review
Faculty mentors: David Sparling, MD, PhD; Jeanie Tryggestad, MD (Department of Pediatrics, Section of Diabetes & Endocrinology, University of Oklahoma HSC)
Summary: This is a retrospective chart review over a five-year period from January 2015 through December 2019. I studied demographic information on each patient, including type of diabetes, whether the diabetes was new-onset or previously-diagnosed, date of admission, age, sex, insurance, and zip code. Zip codes were then cross-referenced with the University of Wisconsin’s Area Deprivation Index, or ADI— a proxy for socioeconomic status down to the neighborhood level. A patient’s ADI, insurance status, and history of previous admissions for DKA were found to be significant risk factors for DKA admission.

Sick-day management of type 1 diabetes (Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Hospital)
Summary: As a medical student, I assisted pediatric resident Jeannie Nguyen, MD, with her QI project. Specifically, I distilled an eleven-page slide show into a colorful, single-face, index card-sized reference to be used by patients and family members for sick-day management.

Camp Sweeney is a residential summer camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus outside of Gainesville, Texas. Approximately 250 children, ages 4-19, attend each of three 3-week sessions over the summer. As Senior Associate Medical Program Director, I am involved in reviewing camper data, refining existing diabetes and medical protocols, designing novel protocols, and recruiting members of the Junior and Senior Medical Staff. During the summer sessions, I teach orientation coursework to the Medical Staff, including assistance with principles of insulin dosing, hypo- and hyperglycemia management, ketone management, emergency response protocols, general pediatric care, and communication. I am also involved with day-to-day management of the Medical Staff, adjust insulin dosing, provide diabetes education to campers in lectures by age-level, and share updates with families.
My experiences as a counselor during my undergraduate years were my core inspiration to pursue a career in medicine — specifically pediatric endocrinology.
Recent Design
Emergency Design Collective
Designer, 2020
A group of doctors, designers, public health experts, and other motivated individuals formed the Emergency Design Collective to develop solutions to problems arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. I worked as a designer in a small group whose projects included designing a flyer for COVID-19 testing and developing a web-based resource for families of children with complex medical needs during the pandemic and times of crisis.
in-Training
Design consultant, 2015
in-Training is an online, peer-edited journal run exclusively by medical students. I was asked by the founders to provide input and feedback on the design of in-Training: Stories from Tomorrow’s Physicians, a print publication containing 100+ select pieces published by the magazine since its founding in 2012.
Aggies Invent
Participant, 2015
Aggies Invent is a 48-hour-long event hosted by Texas A&M University's Engineering Innovation Center in which engineering, medical, business, and other students develop solutions to given problems. The theme of my weekend was pediatric medicine.
I was part of an excellent team of engineering and medical students; together, we developed a portable diagnostic kit for health care providers in resource-starved settings. Our product, the PediaPod, combined a stethoscope, electrocardiogram, and pulse oximeter into a small, durable, aesthetically-pleasing prototype.
3 Day Startup
Participant, 2015
3 Day Startup is an intensive, weekend-long event in which students develop an idea through ethnographic research and end-user interviews, apply principles of rapid prototyping, and pitch their product to a panel of judges, many of whom are entrepreneurs and innovators themselves.
After pitching my initial idea, I was able to recruit a talented team; together, we shifted goals and developed an idea for a web-interface that connects high schoolers interested in performing community service with organizations in need of extra help. We later pitched the idea to a local entrepreneur.
Freelance Designer
1999 – present
My interest in design stemmed from a childhood love of print media, logos, and drawing. My work since undergrad has included web, print, and apparel. I love creative exercises, including design, illustration, and photography. Current favorite design interests include shirts/sweatshirts, repeating tile patterns, and stickers. One bucket list dream: illustrating a children’s book.
